Bench Grinders — Keep Your Hands and Eyes Protected
Did You Know?
Over a 7-year period, OSHA reported 7 deaths and more than 2,500 grinder-related injuries — many due to flying debris or improper use. [3]
KNOW THE RISK
- Bench grinders are tabletop-mounted machines used to sharpen tools, shape metal, or polish surfaces. [1]
- They are effective tools — but improper use can result in severe injuries, including lacerations, burns, and amputations.
- Most common injuries come from clothing, gloves, or jewelry getting caught in rotating wheels. [3]
- Improper grinding techniques or using the wrong part of the wheel can also cause wheel shattering or flying fragments, posing serious risks to the face and eyes.
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Mount the Grinder Securely and Check the Guards
- Ensure the grinder is firmly mounted and that tool rests and tongue guards are in place and adjusted properly. [2]
2. Wear Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Always wear safety glasses with side shields or a face shield, and avoid loose clothing or gloves near the rotating wheel. [2]
3. Inspect the Wheel Before Use
- Check for cracks, chips, or damage. Conduct a "ring test" on new wheels and ensure they are properly rated for the grinder. [1]
4. Never Grind on the Side of a Standard Wheel
- Use only the face of the wheel unless the manufacturer specifically allows side grinding. Side pressure can lead to breakage. [2]
TOOL SAFETY REMINDER
Bench grinders are powerful — but they don’t forgive mistakes. Use guards, wear PPE, and follow safe techniques to keep your fingers, face, and eyes protected.
