Toolbox Talk: Boating Safety — Stay Afloat and Stay Aware
Did You Know?
Boating accidents result in over $65 million in property damage each year in the U.S. [2] As recreational boating becomes more popular, so does the risk of injury or death from preventable accidents.
KNOW THE RISK
- Boating is increasingly becoming a popular pastime in the U.S. — and that brings more people into potentially hazardous conditions on the water. [1]
- In 2021, the U.S. Coast Guard reported over 4,000 boating accidents, with more than 600 deaths and thousands of injuries. [2]
- Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Impaired operation greatly increases the risk of collision, drowning, and poor decision-making. [2]
- Other common causes include operator inattention, lack of experience, and mechanical failure.
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Wear a Properly Fitted Life Jacket
- Every passenger should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times, even strong swimmers. [2]
2. Get Boating Safety Training
- Take a boating safety course certified by NASBLA (National Association of Boating Law Administrators). Education dramatically lowers accident risk. [2]
3. Watch for Carbon Monoxide
- Boats with enclosed cabins or rear-facing seating near exhaust vents can accumulate deadly levels of carbon monoxide. Ventilate thoroughly and keep engines properly tuned. [2]
4. Don’t Drink and Boat
- Operating a boat under the influence is not only illegal — it’s deadly. Designate a sober captain and practice common sense on the water. [2]
BOATING SAFETY REMINDER
Fun on the water can turn tragic in seconds. Boating safety starts with preparation, training, and a clear mind. Know the rules, respect the risks, and always wear your life jacket.
