Toolbox Talk: Eye First Aid — Act Fast to Prevent Lasting Damage
Did You Know?
A fingerprint has 40 unique characteristics, while the human iris has 256 — making your eyes one of your most complex and delicate features. [3]
KNOW THE RISK
- About 2,000 eye injuries occur every day in U.S. workplaces. These range from minor irritation to permanent vision loss. [1]
- Most eye injuries are preventable with proper PPE, awareness, and fast first aid response. [2]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. For Chemical Exposure, Rinse Immediately
- Remove contact lenses if present and rinse the eye with clean water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Use an emergency eyewash station if available. [2]
2. Don’t Rub If Something Is in Your Eye
- Rubbing can scratch the cornea and worsen the injury. Try to flush out the particle with water or blink repeatedly to dislodge it. [2]
3. Seek Medical Help When Needed
- If a chemical burn, object penetration, or pain persists after flushing, seek professional medical attention immediately. [2]
