Toolbox Talk: Eye First Aid — Act Fast to Prevent Lasting Damage

Did You Know?

A fingerprint has 40 unique characteristics, while the human iris has 256 — making your eyes one of your most complex and delicate features. [3]

KNOW THE RISK

  • About 2,000 eye injuries occur every day in U.S. workplaces. These range from minor irritation to permanent vision loss. [1]
  • Most eye injuries are preventable with proper PPE, awareness, and fast first aid response. [2]

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. For Chemical Exposure, Rinse Immediately

  • Remove contact lenses if present and rinse the eye with clean water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Use an emergency eyewash station if available. [2]

2. Don’t Rub If Something Is in Your Eye

  • Rubbing can scratch the cornea and worsen the injury. Try to flush out the particle with water or blink repeatedly to dislodge it. [2]

3. Seek Medical Help When Needed

  • If a chemical burn, object penetration, or pain persists after flushing, seek professional medical attention immediately. [2]

FIRST AID REMINDER

Your vision is precious — and incredibly fragile. In the event of an eye injury, quick action can make the difference between full recovery and permanent damage. Know what to do and respond without delay.
