Toolbox Talk: Fall Protection — Stop the Fall Before It Starts

Did You Know?

Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry, according to OSHA. [2]

KNOW THE RISK

  • Falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. [1]
  • In 2018, there were 320 fatal falls out of 1,008 total fatalities in construction. That’s nearly one-third of all deaths in the industry. [2]
  • With proper safety precautions, falls from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs can be prevented. Fall protection isn’t optional — it’s essential. [2]

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Use Fall Protection at 6 Feet or More

  • OSHA requires fall protection for workers at heights of 6 feet or more above a lower level in construction. Always secure yourself when working at elevation. [2]

2. Wear a Full-Body Harness and Stay Tied Off

  • A harness is only effective when properly worn and connected to a secure anchor point. Use lanyards or lifelines that limit fall distance and absorb energy. [3]

3. Inspect Fall Protection Equipment Every Time

  • Check for frayed straps, damaged buckles, or corrosion before each use. Tag and remove any equipment that fails inspection. [3]

FALL SAFETY REMINDER

One misstep can lead to tragedy — but most falls are preventable. Follow fall protection guidelines, wear your gear, and never take shortcuts when working at height. Your life depends on it.
