KNOW THE RISK

  • Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a colorless gas known for its “rotten egg” smell. It occurs naturally during the breakdown of organic materials and is common in oil and gas, wastewater treatment, and agriculture. [1]
  • H₂S is both extremely flammable and highly toxic, posing a dual threat of explosion and poisoning. [1]
  • Although it can be detected by smell at low levels, the sense of smell becomes paralyzed at higher concentrations, making it unreliable for detection. Never rely on your nose as a warning system.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Do Not Rely on Smell

  • Use proper detection equipment — odor becomes ineffective as a warning sign when H₂S levels rise. [3]

2. Identify Potential Sources of H₂S

  • Assess all processes or environments where H₂S could be released, such as confined spaces, sewage lines, or chemical reactions. [3]

3. Use Calibrated Monitors to Detect Airborne Levels

  • Air monitoring should be continuous in high-risk areas. Always test before entry and during occupancy in confined or enclosed spaces. [3]
