Toolbox Talk: Seasonal Flu — Protect Yourself and Those Around You

Did You Know?

Annually, there are between 12,000 and 52,000 flu-related deaths in the U.S. — many of which could be prevented with vaccination and early treatment. [2]

STAY INFORMED

  • Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It spreads through droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. [1]
  • The flu can range from mild to severe — and in some cases, it leads to hospitalization or death. [1]
  • Those at higher risk include older adults, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. [1]
  • Symptoms often include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.

HELPFUL TIPS

1. Get Vaccinated

  • The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine every year. It takes about two weeks for the body to develop immunity. [1]

2. Get Vaccinated Annually — Regardless of Age

  • Everyone 6 months and older should get the flu shot every season, unless a medical condition prevents it. [1]

3. Practice Good Hygiene

  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals. Wash your hands frequently and disinfect commonly touched surfaces. [1]

4. Seek Medical Attention Early

  • If you develop flu-like symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away. Antiviral medications work best when taken early. [1]

SEASONAL FLU SAFETY REMINDER

Flu season doesn’t have to catch you off guard. Vaccination, good hygiene, and quick action when symptoms start can dramatically reduce risk for you and your loved ones. Take the flu seriously — and protect yourself before it spreads.
