Toolbox Talk: Summertime Burn Safety — Enjoy the Heat Without Getting Burned

Did You Know?

44% of all firework injuries are burns. [2] And that’s just one of many ways people get burned during summer celebrations, barbecues, and outdoor fun.

KNOW THE RISK

  • Summertime brings fun activities like camping, grilling, fireworks, and campfires — all of which carry burn hazards. [1]
  • Burns can cause painful blisters, swelling, and permanent scarring. Severe burns may also result in infection or heat-related illness if not treated properly.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Dress Smart for Cooking

  • Wear short sleeves or roll them up when working near a grill or open flame to prevent accidental sleeve ignition. [1]

2. Use Long-Handled Tools

  • When cooking on BBQ grills or over open flames, use long-handled utensils to keep your hands away from heat. [1]

3. Create a Safety Zone

  • Establish a 3-foot “kid- and pet-free” zone around grills, fire pits, and fireworks setup areas. [1]

4. Leave Fireworks to the Pros

  • Attend public firework displays and avoid using consumer fireworks at home. If you do use them, follow all safety guidelines and local laws. [1]

FIRE SAFETY REMINDER

Summer fun and fire go hand-in-hand — but so do caution and preparation. Protect yourself and others from burns by staying aware, using safe practices, and respecting fire at all times.
