Toolbox Talk: Tire Inflation — A Small Check That Saves Fuel, Money, and Lives

Did You Know?

Proper tire inflation can be the equivalent of saving 2¢ per gallon in fuel. [2]

STAY INFORMED

  • Keeping your tires properly inflated is critical for vehicle safety, handling, and fuel efficiency. [1]
  • Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which means your engine has to work harder — using more fuel. [1]
  • Even a few PSI below the recommended level can lower gas mileage by up to 3%. Over time, that adds up. [2]

HELPFUL TIPS

1. Check Tire Pressure Monthly

  • At minimum, check tire pressures once a month — or more often in extreme temperatures, which cause pressure fluctuations. [1]

2. Use a Quality Pressure Gauge

  • Dial or digital gauges provide more accurate readings than the “pencil” types at gas stations. [1]

3. Inflate to the Manufacturer’s Recommendations

  • Check the sticker on your driver’s door frame for the correct PSI — not the number on the tire sidewall. [3]

4. Measure When Tires Are Cold

  • Check pressure before driving, when tires are cool. Driving heats the tires and gives a higher reading. [1]

DRIVING SAFETY REMINDER

Underinflated tires may seem like a small issue, but they affect braking distance, steering control, and gas mileage. Regular checks can prevent blowouts, extend tire life, and reduce fuel costs — all in under 5 minutes.
