Safety Topic: Walk-Behind Lawnmowers — Cut Grass, Not Corners

Did You Know?

75 people are killed each year from lawnmower-related injuries. [2]

KNOW THE RISK

  • In the U.S., more than 80,000 people are injured each year in lawnmower accidents. [1]
  • Children under 19 account for nearly 13,000 of these injuries annually. [1]
  • Common injuries include hearing loss, eye trauma from flying debris, lacerations, and even amputations. [1]
  • Fortunately, most of these incidents are preventable with simple safety precautions.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Always wear hearing protection and ANSI-rated safety glasses. Avoid mowing barefoot or in sandals. [1]

2. Fuel Safely

  • Fill the gas tank before starting, and never refuel while the engine is hot or running. Gasoline vapors can ignite. [1]

3. Shut Off Before Making Adjustments

  • Always turn off the motor and disconnect the spark plug before clearing clogs or adjusting the blade. [2]

4. Push — Never Pull — On Slopes

  • Push mowers uphill or across slopes to reduce the risk of slipping and getting pulled under the machine. [1]

HOME SAFETY REMINDER

Lawnmowing might feel like routine yardwork, but the risks are real. Protect yourself and your family with proper gear, safe handling, and awareness of hazards.
