Winter Storm Home Heating — Stay Warm, Stay Safe

Did You Know?

Space heaters cause about 1,700 fires and 80 deaths annually in the U.S. — many during winter storms or power outages. [2]

STAY INFORMED

  • During winter storms, alternative heating sources like space heaters, fireplaces, and generators are often used — but they come with serious risks. [1]
  • Improper use of heating devices can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, or burns, especially in confined or poorly ventilated areas. [1]
  • Fuel-burning appliances should never be used indoors unless they’re specifically rated for indoor use.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Only Use Approved Space Heaters

  • Look for models with automatic shut-off features and the UL certification. Never leave a heater unattended. [2]

2. Maintain a 3-Foot Safety Zone

  • Keep heaters away from curtains, furniture, bedding, and anything flammable. Pets and children should also stay clear. [2]

3. Never Use an Oven to Heat Your Home

  • Gas ovens can release dangerous levels of carbon monoxide when used improperly. Stick to safe, purpose-built heating methods. [1]

4. Install and Test CO and Smoke Detectors

  • Ensure working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are installed near sleeping areas. Test batteries monthly during winter months. [1]

WINTER SAFETY REMINDER

Staying warm shouldn't put your household at risk. Use heating devices properly, maintain clear space around them, and keep detectors up to date. Warmth is important — but safety comes first.
